South Africans flock to see Mandela film | IOL.co.za: "South Africans flocked to cinemas on Thursday to watch the first screenings of the hotly-anticipated Nelson Mandela biopic in a country still battling to exorcise its dark past.

Viewers of the two-and-a-half-hour Long Walk To Freedom tracing Mandela's life from childhood to his landmark 1994 election said the film gave them a better insight into South Africa's past, but it was also an emotional rollercoaster.

The successful bidder at R950 000, Anant Singh, is the producer of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, on the life of the anti-apartheid hero to be released on Thursday.

The assortment of 79 signed mementos at the rare auction date from 1964 to 2010 and include the historic speech the peace icon delivered from the dock in 1964 during the Rivonia Trial that sent him to prison."

In the first draft of The Presidential Years, dated October 16, 1998, and seen by Reuters at the Nelson Mandela Foundation archives, the anti-apartheid hero writes of the hopes, fears and fragilities of liberation movements the world over."

The 95-year-old statesman remains "quite ill", she added although not critical, as he convalesces at his home in Johannesburg with the help of a team of 22 doctors, after spending months in hospital suffering from a lung infection."
